UNO NAME SUMMER TOUR: Pacific Northwest Ferry Industry

Early August – right before Fall term begins

Join Professor Chris McKesson for a seven day tour of the busy and productive Pacific Northwest ferry industry. Toured facilities will include:

  • Todd Seattle Shipyard (now Vigor Industries): Build and repair yard specializing in large commercial and naval vessels
  • Kvichak marine Industries: Builders of aluminum high performance ferries, catamarans, hydrofoils, and hovercraft
  • Ride the Washington State Ferries double-ended monohull ferry to Whidbey Island WA
  • Nichols Brothers Boat Builders: Builders of aluminum high speed ferries
  • Dakota Creek Industries: Builders of aluminum high-speed ferries
  • Ride the Washington State Ferry Victoria BC
  • Tour the Victoria BC Maritime Museum
  • Ride the Victoria Clipper aluminum catamaran high-speed ferry from Victoria to Seattle

At each facility the tour will consist of the following:

  • During breakfast at the hotel, Professor McKesson will give a short introduction to the facility and why it is of interest to this group.
  • At the facility personnel will give their own description of the company’s products or services. They have also been invited to discuss the following points:
    • Relationship of their company with Naval Architects: Do they hire them, use them as consultants, supply them with data,…?
    • Features they value in a naval architect: What makes one great?
    • “What I wish they would teach you in school”
    • A forecast for the future of the industry

After the tour, during dinner in the city, Professor McKesson will lead a table discussion of “what did we learn?”

Cost: Students: $2000 Alumni & Friends: $2500

Costs include coach air fare from MSY, and all travel, lodging (double occupancy) and meals.
